Men Avoid Doctors — Here’s the Cost

2025-12-16 By Nathan Hughes

We do indeed observe that many men dislike seeing doctors, often believing they are healthy. However, statistics show that 80% of patients with serious illnesses admit that their neglect of medical care led to minor ailments developing into major ones. They only seek medical attention when serious conditions like heart disease or stroke occur, missing the optimal window for treatment. Urology primarily deals with conditions specific to men, such as erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation. Many men find these conditions difficult to discuss, often only seeking medical help under pressure from their wives. It's important to note that erectile function is a key indicator of men's health. Many diseases, such as heart disease and stroke, can manifest as changes in erectile function long before their onset. Therefore, early detection and intervention are crucial for health. Other symptoms, such as feeling constantly tired and lacking energy, poor appetite and sleep, memory loss, and mood swings, also deserve attention.

Common Andrological Diseases and Their Characteristics:

  1. Prostatitis:

Caused by bacterial infection or prolonged sitting, symptoms include frequent and urgent urination. Antibiotic treatment is required. Avoid spicy foods.
  1. Erectile Dysfunction:

Related to vascular or hormonal abnormalities. Medication can be used; severe cases require surgery. Psychological counseling is recommended.
  1. Premature Ejaculation:

Due to abnormal nerve regulation or high sensitivity, behavioral training combined with medication is effective. Partner cooperation is necessary.
  1. Balanitis:

Prone to infection due to phimosis. Antifungal or antibiotic ointments are needed. Surgery is recommended for recurrent cases.
  1. Varicocele:

Caused by venous valve insufficiency. Mild cases can be relieved with a support; severe cases require surgery.

Dangers of Not Treating:

  1. Impaired reproductive function is one of the most direct harms of andrological diseases

For example, conditions like prostatitis and varicocele can affect sperm quality, leading to decreased fertility; erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation directly impact the quality of sexual life and, in severe cases, may cause infertility. Without timely intervention, some diseases may develop into irreversible damage, such as testicular atrophy and vas deferens obstruction.
  1. The risk of causing chronic diseases should not be ignored

Long-term prostatitis may increase the likelihood of urinary tract infections and is even associated with kidney disease; hypogonadism related to metabolic abnormalities may lead to osteoporosis and cardiovascular problems; some reproductive system inflammations, if left untreated, may also increase the risk of tumors.
  1. Partner health risks exist in certain infectious diseases

Urethritis and prostatitis caused by pathogens can be transmitted through sexual contact; recurrent inflammatory diseases such as balanitis can also increase the partner's chances of contracting gynecological inflammation. Timely treatment is crucial for the health of both partners.
  1. Decreased quality of life manifests in multiple ways

Frequency and urgency of urination affect work concentration; perineal pain may limit mobility; the economic burden and time cost of treatment may exacerbate psychological stress. Some patients develop stigma due to repeated unsuccessful medical visits, further impacting their social functioning.

Reasons for not seeking treatment:

Psychological stress and social barriers often accompany urological diseases. Feelings of inferiority and anxiety arising from the disease may develop into depression; tension in marital relationships caused by sexual dysfunction may trigger family conflicts; some patients avoid social interaction for fear of privacy breaches, creating a vicious cycle. Studies show that approximately 40% of patients with sexual dysfunction also have significant psychological problems. Therefore, there are reasons for not seeking treatment.
