Is Being Busy Actually Making Life Better?

2025-12-14 By Nathan Hughes

By keeping busy, we can not only heal our inner anxieties but also improve ourselves and realize our value. Moderate busyness allows us to escape negative emotions and find rhythm and direction in life. Appropriate leisure is necessary, but excessive leisure can lead to spiritual emptiness. In this information-saturated age, our attention is often distracted by various trivial matters. How to maintain mental balance amidst busyness is a challenge we all need to face. By keeping busy, we can not only heal our inner anxieties but also improve ourselves and realize our value. Wang Yangming once said, "When busy, the mind is not chaotic; when idle, the mind is not empty." This is not only an affirmation of busyness but also a wisdom for life.

Business is a good medicine for healing the heart.

When we feel bored and empty, we often fall into deep self-doubt and anxiety. Once we are idle, many unnecessary worries easily arise. Moderate busyness allows us to escape these negative emotions and find rhythm and direction in life. Appropriate leisure is necessary, but excessive leisure can lead to spiritual emptiness.
In this information-saturated age, our attention is often distracted by various trivial matters. Maintaining inner balance amidst a busy schedule is a challenge we all face. Through busyness, we can not only heal inner anxieties but also improve ourselves and realize our value.

Business is a form of life wisdom.

Time flies by. We need to find joy and meaning in life amidst our busyness. Focusing on the present moment is essential for true focus. In this age of information overload, maintaining focus is particularly important. The wisdom of life lies in understanding balance. Busyness and leisure are not opposites but complementary. Only by learning to relax amidst busyness can our minds truly rest. Through continuous effort and practice, we can live a more fulfilling life and reap greater happiness and joy.

Escape ineffective busyness

  1. Adjust expectations

Setting expectations that are too high (or too low) will lead to stress. Sometimes, you just need to take a step back and ask yourself what is truly realistic. If you are already doing a lot and consistently working efficiently, you may need to slow down. We rarely feel we should be busier. Conversely, this only indicates that we may not have set meaningful goals at work. Setting goals that keep you passionate can raise your expectations of yourself and force you to engage in life in a self-enjoying way.
  1. Find More Satisfying Work, Friends, and Hobbies

If you spend a lot of time doing things that don't satisfy your psychological needs, you'll feel like you don't have enough time. Work is probably the most significant factor in this. If you're not satisfied with your job, I recommend reading Cal Newport's *So Good They Can't Ignore You*, which is also one of my favorite books on job satisfaction. It's worth noting that friends and leisure activities can also drain our energy. In your daily life, do you ever find yourself incredibly busy, yet somehow still spending hours each night watching TV or playing on your phone? Perhaps the core issue isn't a lack of time, but rather a lack of activities that truly meet your personal needs.
  1. Set More Limitations

Feeling temporarily busy or bored is often due to a poor balance between new opportunities and existing tasks. When opportunities appear little by little, like a trickle, we feel uneasy and weary; when they come rushing in like a torrent, we feel overwhelmed.
By better managing the flow and appearance of opportunities, we can alleviate the problem of being too busy to some extent. If you feel overwhelmed, tighten your constraints; even with new opportunities, you should default to saying "no." If you feel you're not busy enough, relax those constraints and gladly embrace more potential opportunities.
It's worth noting that different sources of responsibility may require different management approaches. For example, while I usually decline invitations to speak in public, I readily accept podcast interviews. In my view, the time investment for a podcast interview is far less than the time spent preparing for a speech. Often, if we are overly busy, it's simply because we haven't properly managed specific sources of responsibility.

Conclusion

A busy life is not about escaping, but about facing challenges better. Let us find peace within our busyness and appreciate the beauty of life. Whether it's work, study, or exercise, let us grow through action and accumulate wisdom. Let's get busy, make our lives fulfilling and meaningful, and find our own joy and happiness. Only in this way can we dance freely on the stage of life and live a wonderful life.
